University Nutrition Projects
As part of the Northamptonshire HAF programme, Northamptonshire Sport have funded research projects run by the University of Northampton in 2022 and 2025. The aim of the first project was to give an overview of the programme and give recommendations going forward. The aim of he second project was to ensure all HAF providers have the necessary resources in order to deliver nutritional education as part of their HAF camps.
2021 – 2022 Evaluation Research Project
Findings from the 2022 Evaluation project can be found below in the available downloads section. The paper helped shape current processes done within Northamptonshire as part of the day to day running of HAF in the county. It was also shared nationally with other HAF coordinators and ‘Childcare Works’, the supporting organisation to HAF.
2023 – 2025 Nutrition Research Project
Following the original project, a new university project was funded with a specific focus on the nutrition element of the programme. The hope was this project would help providers feel confident and well equipped to include nutritional educational sessions within their camps. Explore what food was currently offered, suggesting small healthy changes and investigate further what barriers are preventing hot food from being offered.
The team from the University wanted to hear from providers, parents/carers and children regarding their views in more detail about their experiences of the HAF programme to date. Also the extent and impact of any nutritional education that had been received, and how Providers can best implement nutritional education going forward.
During the Summer 2025 HAF programme, researchers also conducted site visits to hear these experiences of HAF nutritional education. Although the finished academic paper is not available yet, providers have since received findings and suggestions to help with their provision this year from the project.
